Calls for Penny Pritzker, billionaire Harvard Corporation President have grown after Harvard University President Claudine Gay announced her resignation on January 2. Dr. Gay's tenure was cut short by mounting criticism over her handling of antisemitism on campus and, most recently, accusations of plagiarism in her academic work.
Who Is Penny Pritzker?
Penny Pritzker is an American billionaire businesswoman and civic leader.
She served as the 38th United States secretary of commerce 2013 to 2017 in the Obama administration.
Since September 2023, she has been working in the position of U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine's Economic Recovery, a Biden administration appointee.
Pritzker's Role With Harvard
Pritzker graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard College in 1981.
In 2018, Pritzker was elected to the President and Fellows of Harvard College, also known as the Harvard Corporation, the 12-person group which governs Harvard University.
In 2021, months after donating $100 million to the university, she was elevated to the Corporation's top role, that of the senior fellow.
She was also the head of the search committee that chose Claudine Gay for the position of the University's President.
The committee considered more than 600 nominations over the span of just five months, making it the shortest Harvard presidential search in almost 70 years.
In the weeks following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, there were multiple anti-Israel protests at university campuses in the United States, which supporters of Israel alleged to have had antisemitic undertones.
Dr. Gay's handling of the aftermath of Hamas's Oct. 7 attacks on Israel drew widespread criticism, fuelling calls for her resignation or removal from the post.
Her remarks at a House committee hearing in early December, where she gave an unclear response to a question about whether calls for Jewish genocide violated the campus code of conduct, further fueled the outrage.
Whether or not Pritzker heeds these calls for her resignation, only time will tell.
