A Northern Nevada-based aerospace and defense company saw a key rival eliminated from a high-profile program to replace the Air Force’s “Doomsday plane.”
Sierra Nevada Corp. remains the only publicly confirmed competitor for the Air Force’s E-4B Nightwatch replacement program after Boeing was eliminated from consideration.
Boeing’s removal, which was first reported by Reuters, takes out a key competitor that has manufactured and upgraded the Air Force’s fleet of E-4Bs since the 1970s. The E-4B earned the nickname “Doomsday plane” because the mobile airborne command center was designed to survive a nuclear attack.
Boeing cited business reasons for bowing out of the Air Force’s Survivable Airborne Operations Center competition while continuing to maintain confidence in its work.
“We are approaching all new contract opportunities with added discipline to ensure we can meet our commitments and support the long-term health of our business,” a Boeing spokesperson said in response to a Reno Gazette Journal query.
“We remain confident our SAOC approach is the most comprehensive, technically mature and lowest-risk solution for the customer and Boeing.”
Why was Boeing eliminated from the ‘Doomsday plane’ competition?
Boeing has been looking at potential contracts with a stricter eye following huge losses from its deal to manufacture two new versions of the Air Force One planes used to fly U.S. presidents.
Boeing initially pledged during former President Trump’s administration in 2018 to make both planes for $3.9 billion. The company, however, now calls the deal a mistake after losing more than $2 billion from the jets due to cost overruns.
The Air Force One deal likely remains a key consideration for Boeing as Reuters reports that the company’s refusal to sign a fixed-price agreement for the Doomsday plane led to the company’s elimination, according to unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations.
What does Boeing’s elimination from the E-4B replacement program mean for SNC?
Boeing’s elimination is good news for Reno-Sparks-based SNC, which is seen as an underdog in the E-4B replacement competition.
Boeing and SNC were the only publicly confirmed bidders for the program prior to Boeing’s elimination. The Air Force has declined to confirm whether other companies are taking part in the competition.
The Reno Gazette Journal has reached out to SNC for comment.
