Gareau's total pay that year includes a base salary of $224,409 plus $13,726 in retirement and deferred compensation and $20,410 in nontaxable benefits. He received no bonus/incentive compensation that year.
At $258,548, Gareau's total pay in FY 2021 was about 2% less than his FY 2020 compensation of $262,753. He was paid a base salary of $230,603 that year and received $14,102 in retirement and deferred compensation and $18,048 in nontaxable benefits.
The nonprofit did not provide details about those nontaxable benefits.
Catholic Charities Corp. was founded in 1912. Its stated mission is to "respond to those in need through an integrated system of quality services designed to respect the dignity of every person and build a just and compassionate society." The agency states that it serves and employs "persons of every ethnicity and religion."
The organization ranked among the largest nonprofits in Northeast Ohio in 2022 as measured by annual expenses, according to Crain's research.
The nonprofit reported approximately $42.6 million in annual contributions in 2021 — or 9% more than 2020 contributions of $39 million — $52.12 million in total revenue and $51 million in total expenses. It ended 2021 with $62.4 million in total assets.
The agency reported $2.9 million in fundraising expenses in 2021.
It also reported $39,913 in lobbying expenses that year. Its lobbying efforts include "presenting Roman Catholic views on timely topics."
