Dominic Perrottet pops up in New York meets News Corp execs - The Australian Financial Review

Plenty of eyebrows raised at the sight of Dominic Perrottet, the former NSW premier, in New York over the past week. Sources say the politician, who has also been the state’s treasurer and finance minister, took the time to catch up with senior figures at News Corporation’s HQ while in town.

Three months after losing the election, Perrottet is sitting on the backbench where his considerable talents are surely going to waste. His predecessor, Gladys Berejiklian, is an Optus executive – although she still awaits the findings of a corruption probe – while Mike Baird was National Australia Bank’s chief customer officer before running HammondCare.

It is not clear who Perrottet met, given Robert Thomson, News Corp’s chief executive, was out of town and Lachlan Murdoch was in France for the wedding of Tamie Ingham, of the chicken empire family. Perrottet doesn’t have a particularly big profile within the Murdoch family, insiders said.

But talk of possible employment is overblown, Perrottet says. He was in the United States helping a family member relocate and has simply been on holidays, catching up with old friends. “I’m in no way looking at jobs,” he said. “Just meeting with acquaintances that I have ... mates from my uni days who are in finance over here who I haven’t seen for a long time.”

Total silence from Optus about their massive November data breach in the past few weeks, no doubt in anticipation of a long-awaited Deloitte report into the hack, which affected 9.8 million current and former customers.

Seven’s chief marketing and audience officer Melissa Hopkins.

But that restraint does not extend to former Optus executive Melissa Hopkins, who joined Seven West Media earlier this year as chief marketing and audience officer. She is slated to appear at the Association for Data-driven Marketing and Advertising forum in August to present her “lessons from a data breach”.

“In Hopkins’ captivating session,” the program reads, “she will be sharing a behind-the-scenes case study and reveal how the unprecedented ... breach at Optus transformed the company forever”.

We hear there’s a bit of, err, promotional licence in that description. “There is no way in hell I would share anything that would damage a brand that I worked so hard at for years,” Hopkins told Media Observed.

“What I will be talking about is chief marketing officers needing to be aware of cyber and the damage that can happen around a cyberattack. That means sharing some of the learnings from a marketing perspective. But they will be macro trends, and absolutely nothing confidential.”
