Fire at Industrial Quartz Corp. in Mentor determined to be ‘accidental’ - The News-Herald

A structure fire at Industrial Quartz Corp., located at 7552-D St. Clair Ave. in Mentor, has been determined “to be accidental,” a result of the nature of the company’s normal manufacturing process, the Mentor Fire Department stated following the May 18 incident.

According to Chief Robert Searles, two employees discovered the fire in the rear of the business, one of whom attempted to put it out.

“He then called 911 before they both exited safely from the building,” Searles said, noting the department responded to the call at about 4:36 p.m.

“We upgraded our initial response, requesting Willoughby’s ladder truck and (Mentor Fire Department) Station No. 3 conducted an aggressive interior attack and quickly extinguished the fire.”

No injuries were reported, Searles confirmed, adding both occupants were evaluated for smoke inhalation as crews worked to ventilate the building.

Adjoining buildings to the west were also checked for secondary smoke damage and were found to be clear. The roof was also checked to make sure there was no fire extension, Searles said.

“The crews did an excellent job,” he added. “We want to thank Chief (Todd) Ungar and the assistance we received from the Willoughby Fire Department.”

While dollar-value damage to Industrial Quartz is currently undetermined, the company was able to resume operations May 19.
