Yellow Corp. opens its first CDL Driving Academy in Pa. - PennLive

Trucking company, Yellow Corp. is opening its 17th Commercial Driver’s License Driving Academy.

The new training school will open next week in Middlesex Township. This is Yellow Corp.’s first training school in the state.

The Yellow CDL Driving Academy will offer apprentice drivers four weeks of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training with an instructor. The academy is tuition-free and students are paid to earn while they learn.

“You actually have a job while you’re going through the program,” Yellow Corp. CEO Darren Hawkins said.

At the completion of instruction, trainees sit for the commercial driver’s license test. After they pass the test, trainees complete their initial apprenticeship training. When all driving qualifications are met, graduates are employed by Yellow as a truck driver.

Yellow is partnering with the U.S. Department of Labor as part of its apprenticeship program.

United State Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, Gov. Tom Wolf and officials from Yellow Corp. were on hand Tuesday morning to cut the ribbon on the new facility in front of two tractor trailers.

“We’re pleased that our 17th driving academy will soon open, giving men and women the opportunity to train for a commercial driver’s license and begin a new career in trucking,” Hawkins said. “Truckers are American heroes, responsible for delivering essential goods to businesses and homes coast to coast.”

Darrel Harris, president and COO of Yellow Corp. said there is a shortage of 80,000 truck drivers nationwide including 4,000 in Pennsylvania. Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new training program marked the end of the Biden Administration’s 90-day challenge, which was a national effort to recruit employers interested in developing new registered apprenticeship programs and expanding existing programs to help put more well-trained drivers on the road in good trucking jobs.

“Apprenticeships give somebody a pathway into a career,” Walsh said.

Yellow Corp. employs 32,000 people throughout North America and transports more than 20 million shipments annually for more than 250,000 customers. The company has 11 terminals and 1,300 employees in Pennsylvania. Yellow has a goal to bring 1,000 new drivers into the trucking industry this year, according to Hawkins.

Those interested in finding out more information about the training program can contact the driving academy hotline at 833-475-8201 to apply and learn more about enrollment. As part of the application process, job applicants will be required to obtain a Class A CDL permit; pass a Department of Transportation physical examination and drug test and complete a Transportation Security Administration Hazmat threat assessment.

Walsh said that apprenticeships open the doors to the middle class.

“We need to continue to create talent in the pipeline. We need to continue to reach out to give people opportunity in this great industry of trucking,” he said.
