Plant-Based Dog Food Brand Petaluma Earns B Corp Certification - Pet Age

Press release: Petaluma

Petaluma, a pet nutrition brand on a mission to reduce animal lovers’ household environmental impact, recently announced it has received its B Corp Certification, a rigorous designation based on a company’s social and environmental performance. The plant-based dog food company achieved a B Lab Impact Assessment score of 105, which is 25 points above the minimum passing score.

“We set out to create Petaluma, because most options on the market were forcing us to compromise on environmental and animal welfare,” said Caroline Buck, co-founder and CMO of Petaluma. “We built Petaluma to meet consumers’ standards up to consumers’ standards for quality nutrition, sustainability, and transparent business practices. Our B Corp certification provides independent validation of our holistic approach to building a company that is better for our pets and the planet.”

As only the second US-based and the first California-based dog food brand to receive the B Corp Certification, Petaluma is setting a new standard for the pet food industry. Petaluma provides sustainable alternatives to resource-intensive animal products and avoids the use of monoculture crops. Just one 18-pound bag of Petaluma’s gently oven baked dog food saves 2,200 gallons of freshwater, avoids 5,300 square feet of land use impact, and reduces 185 pounds of CO2 when compared to a leading conventional kibble brand. The mission-based company is also a public benefit corporation, a member of 1% for the Planet, and Climate Neutral Certified.

Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. Unlike other certifications for businesses, B Lab is unique in its ability to measure a company’s entire social and environmental impact. Companies must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.
