Michael Lieberman opens our solving week.
MONDAY PUZZLE — This is Michael Lieberman’s third puzzle for The New York Times, and what a beauty! This was a smooth solve for me, and a nice way to start my day. The only way it could have been better would be with a certain cookie, or a LARGE PIZZA. Maybe not this early in the day, though.
Tricky Clues
34A. If you’re new to solving, this is a good one to look out for. ITO has appeared 400 times in the New York Times Crossword. In 18 of those entries, it appeared with the same clue used in this puzzle, and it has often appeared in a similar, fill-in-the-blank type of cluing.
62A. A STAN is a person who is devoted to a musical artist. The term stems from the similarly named Eminem song from 2000 about an obsessed fan. The term was often used in a disparaging way, but more recently, to say you STAN someone has come to be a self-identifier of fandom.
7D. In this puzzle, “Cher holder?” does not refer to someone holding the singer Cher, but rather to an IPOD, which might be used to store, or hold, her music.
30D. ETHYL alcohol, more widely known as ethanol, is commonly used as an additive in gasoline. It’s also the same type of alcohol found in, well, alcoholic beverages. Isn’t chemistry amazing?
Today’s Theme
Michael Lieberman offers us three theme answers and a revealer in today’s puzzle. I think this theme is perfect for a Monday; there’s no trickery, just a bit of trivia. Let’s work forward from the theme answers.
First, we have 17-Across — “Arkansas’s capital” — which is LITTLE ROCK. Next, we’re looking at 26-Across, “Bicolor cookies also called half-moons,” which are BLACK AND WHITES. For our third theme answer, at 42-Across, we have “Final practice before the big show,” or a DRESS REHEARSAL.
So how do we get a theme out of these? Let’s look at the clue for the revealer, at 57-Across, “Fashion designer associated with the item spelled out by the starts of 17-, 26- and 42-Across.” The item spelled out is a LITTLE BLACK DRESS, and the fashion designer in question is COCO CHANEL.
CHANEL designed the garment in the early 1920s, and it was first seen in the October 1926 issue of Vogue. The publication wrote that the dress was “Chanel’s Ford,” meaning that it was simple and accessible like the Ford Model T, of which nearly 15 million had been produced by that time.
I went through a big fashion phase when I was a teenager (no, I will not share pictures), so I had a lot of fun solving this one. Lots of great fill here; I loved seeing YSL, JORTS and STAN, for three. I hope you enjoyed this puzzle as much as I did.
Constructor Notes
I really love this puzzle and hope you all enjoyed it, whether you have an LBD in your closet or are more of a JORTS person who learned something new about fashion today. It’s nice to present a theme on a topic that doesn’t get a whole lot of play in crosswords. So I hope it feels fun and fresh, especially to those of you who don’t always feel like you’re in the crossword’s target audience.
I’m also very happy to debut BLACK AND WHITES, which are my absolute favorite cookies — so much so that my wife and I served them at our wedding instead of cake. My personal favorites are from Bea’s Bakery in Tarzana, Calif. If anyone who works there is reading this, please send me a few — it’s surprisingly hard to find a good one here in D.C.!
If you’re on Twitter, I occasionally tweet about crossword puzzles and other word stuffs @footnote24.
