Ball Corp.’s new line of recyclable aluminum cups, which made their public debut last year during the University of Colorado football team’s home opener against the University of Nebraska, will be used at Hard Rock Stadium during next week’s Super Bowl game in Miami.
During the big game Feb. 2 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, 50,000 of Ball’s 20-ounce cups will be available.
The cups, which can be recycled over and over again, will then be served at Hard Rock Stadium for future Miami Dolphins games and other concerts and sporting events.
Broomfield-based Ball spent seven years developing the new cups, which are designed to be more environmentally friendly than the plastic cups typically used at stadiums. Late last year, the company opened a new manufacturing plant in Georgia dedicated to production of the aluminum cups.
“We take sustainability very seriously at Ball,” Ball general manager Sebastian Siethoff told BizWest. The development of the new cups is an example of Ball “riding the anti-plastic wave.”
Siethoff credited partners such as Hard Rock Stadium caterer Centerplate, the Dolphins, the NFL and Bud Light with helping bring the new cups to the Super Bowl.
“This is the future, and this is where the industry is going,” he said. “The Super Bowl is a major showcase for that.”
