After a rare letdown in July, the outdoor industry saw its collective share prices climb back into the black during August, but the upbeat stock performance still didn’t match the scorching marks of the first half of 2021.
The outdoor-focused companies that compose the OBJ Outdoor Index posted an average gain of 1.8 percent, a much-needed rebound after its 1.3 percent decline in the previous month.
That mark was still shy of the Nasdaq (+2.9 percent) and S&P 500 (+2.3 percent), though outdoor businesses did outperform the Dow Jones (+1.2 percent).

Of the 25 public companies that OBJ tracks, 15 saw stocks improve and 10 saw their shares dip in the month. One nice turnaround story was Emerald Holding Inc., which saw the biggest dip in July but rallied for the second-highest share gain in August at 26.1 percent.
The event operator, which owns Outdoor Retailer, said it was on the verge of setting a company record for conferences in the second half of the year, but it’s 2022 that the outdoor industry has its eye on.

The big winner in August, Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc., is also making news on the outdoor front these days. The company’s outdoor specialty concept, Public Lands, is on the verge of opening its first two stores in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Columbus, Ohio, and it announced the first set of nonprofits it will support.
Gregory Mountain Products parent company Samsonite International SA also posted nice gains in the month to round out the top three.

Does the rally from July’s trough signal a return to normalcy or are there still issues like supply chain congestion to sort out before knowing how the industry’s collective stocks will finish the year? Tracking the monthly OBJ Outdoor Index
Below is the OBJ Outdoor Index for August. The Index shows how 25 public corporations—mostly parent companies of outdoor brands, with a couple of retailers, a ski resort giant, and a trade show operator included as well—performed in the calendar month.
The chart includes the companies’ share prices on the last business day of the previous month (July 30), their share price on the last business day of the just-completed month (August 31), the percent change in that period, and current market cap (equal to share price times the total number of shares outstanding).
The OBJ Outdoor Index, unlike other indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial, doesn’t use a market cap weighting system.
Foreign companies’ shares are presented here in U.S. dollars and designated as OTC (over-the-counter) securities since they aren’t listed on U.S. stock exchanges. (One exception is Fenix Outdoor International, whose share price can be found only on Nasdaq Stockholm and is represented as U.S. currency converted from the Swedish krona.)
Underneath the stock chart is a capsule on each of the 25 companies of the OBJ Outdoor Index, including headquarters location, connections to the outdoor industry (if not immediately obvious), key executives, and recent editorial coverage in OBJ, where applicable.
This Index is a living document. We’ll update the chart as needed (monthly and at the end of each quarter), we’ll edit capsules based on organizational changes made, and we’ll add or remove companies based on mergers and acquisitions, newly available trading information, IPOs, and other relevant developments.
