KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - This weekend is the tail end of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney. Saturday focused on the junior shows and the classic’s goals to encourage the next generation of the agriculture industry.
The Cattlemen’s Classic has a big focus on the future of the industry and announced the scholarship winners for the year. The kids put in a lot of work to get selected. From buying the heifers and steers, the kids take on the challenge of training their cattle to be ready for the ring.
Annalynn Beach is just 10 years old and has a passion for the Classic. Last year she trained her cattle and took part in the scholarship program where she has to report back all the hard work she puts in.
“All the work is like working with your cattle and then when you finally get to the show it’s how well you’ve worked with them to see how you can do with your cows and just kind of have fun,” Beach said.
The Cattlemen’s Classic brings on mentors to work with kids on their showmanship and to discuss breeding, genetics, and a wealth of other topics.
“It’s truly much more than going in the show ring for a lap around the ring,” General Manager Ronette Heinrich said. “It’s learning about hard work, dedication, responsibility, they have to learn about communication skills. They’re giving speeches and presentations.”
After a period of record keeping, presentations and interviews the kids are awarded scholarships to help them with purchasing their cattle. Beach won first place for all her efforts and was handed a $1000 check.
“It feels good to finally be a scholarship winner because I’ve been waiting for a long time to figure out if I got it or not,” Beach said.
She hopes to continue on with her passions for the classic and the classic wants to continue to invest in the future of the industry.
“It’s rewarding. We have kids that participate from 8-20 years old and lots of times we’ll joke that the eight year olds are going to catch up with the 20 year olds in a hurry,” Heinrich said. “They’re very well spoken, they’re very well traveled, they’re learning about the industry and they have the drive and the passion to truly make a difference.”
The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic continues Sunday with more of the junior show focusing on breeding heifers. It will take place at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds starting at eight a.m.
