Southlake travel technology company Sabre Corp. will lay off another 800 workers, but end furloughs and pay cuts it implemented early in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sabre Corp., which supplies technology for booking flights and hotels, has been hammered by the downturn in the global travel industry from the COVID-19 pandemic because it gets most of its revenue when customers book travel. Airline travel alone has been down 80% since the beginning of March and analysts don’t expect a full recovery this year.
“Today, we announced a critical step toward completing our transformation into a new Sabre,” said Sabre CEO Sean Menke in a prepared statement. “This pandemic has caused major shifts in the travel ecosystem resulting in the changing needs of our airline, hotel and agency customers.”
Sabre Corp. had instituted 25% pay cuts for employees in March early in the pandemic and said it was also cutting contractors. In April, it said it was furloughing about a third of its global workforce of 9,250 workers.
Those furloughs and pay cuts will end by July 6, the company said, but it will come with fewer workers. Sabre has managed to trim its workforce by about 400 people through voluntary early retirements and buyouts.
Sabre has 43 locations globally. About 25% of its global workforce is in North Texas at its headquarters in Southlake.
There are some signs that companies like Sabre could start to see relief. Las Vegas opened its casinos on Thursday, American Airlines boosted its schedule for July and theme parks across the country have announced plans to reopen.
States, including Texas, are also relaxing quarantines for visitors from certain states that discouraged travel.
Sabre said it will also start a “work from anywhere” program for its employees where it’s possible.
Sabre has already had to alter many of its plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sabre lost $213 million in the first quarter of 2020 after a $57 million gain during the same period a year ago.
It scrapped plans for a merger with competitor Farelogix in May after antitrust authorities held up the $360 million deal.
