Virginia Abrasives Corp Names Fred Daniels New CEO - Rental Equipment Register

Fred Daniels has been appointed the new CEO of Virginia Abrasives Corp. An Economics and Business graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Daniels began his career at what was then known as Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. During his 23 years at HERC, he held a wide range of roles in sales, management and IT before becoming Eastern Region vice president. In 2012, he joined Ames Taping Tools as president and CEO. Daniels and his team at Ames significantly expanded the business and successfully completed the sale of the company in 2017. He is a Six Sigma Greenbelt and has extensive training in LEAN operations and in integrating acquisitions.

Daniels will be based at Virginia Abrasives’ world headquarters in Petersburg, Va.

One of only five companies that makes sandpaper in the United States, Virginia Abrasives carries a vast assortment of cutting, finishing, surface preparation and floor care products and solutions. This includes diamond abrasives for concrete and asphalt cutting and surface preparation, bonded abrasives, concrete power trowel blades, floor grinder tooling and polishing pads. Private-label abrasives are a growing part of the company’s product offerings as well, letting companies market their brands on the consumable products sold in their business.          

Virginia Abrasives Corp. manufactures and distributes abrasives products for the wood flooring and concrete preparation business. The company’s product offerings include sandpaper, diamond and bonded abrasives and non-woven abrasives. Herc Rentals has named Aaron Birnbaum chief operating officer, succeeding Bruce Dressel effective Jan. 1, 2020. Dressel will leave his position as senior vice president and COO Dec. 31, 2019. Birnbaum is currently the company’s senior vice president and his appointment is in keeping with the company’s succession plan, Herc said.

Birnbaum has more than 30 years of experience in the equipment rental industry, all with Herc Rentals and its predecessor business, Hertz Equipment Rental Corp. Birnbaum has had multiple responsibilities with Herc, including oversight of the company’s Western, North Central and Canada regions as well as the company’s Herc Entertainment Services and Cinelease units. He has also held leadership responsibilities related to the company’s strategic planning, operational execution and merger and acquisition activities.

As COO, Birnbaum will assume responsibility for the company’s sales and operations teams, overseeing more than 4,500 employees and approximately 270 Herc Rentals locations. He will also oversee the company’s ProSolutions and Herc Rentals ProContractor categories, its Herc Plus strategic accounts unit and the direct and indirect procurement, marketing and customer care functions.

Birnbaum graduated from Arizona St. University and received an MBA from California State University, Channel Islands.

Birnbaum is based at the company’s Bonita Springs, Fla., field support center.

Herc Rentals is No. 3 on the RER 100.
