Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corp. seeks donations for holiday food drives - cleveland.com

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The holiday season is quickly approaching, which means donations are needed to help those less fortunate enjoy a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal.

For over 30 years, the Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corp. has provided holiday food baskets for hundreds of Lakewood families and senior citizens. That effort is currently under way, with food and monetary donations accepted through Dec. 12.

“Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corp. is a nonprofit organization that provides relief in Lakewood,” board member Rachelle Loraine said.

“We do food drives for Thanksgiving and Christmas to send out meals or Giant Eagle gift cards to families or elderly in need. We gather information through the schools to know what families are in need. We also learn from the food bank if an elderly person needs assistance.”

After starting a hybrid operation during the pandemic, the group is keeping that option open for folks who perhaps don’t have an oven.

This week, the Thanksgiving food drive finds volunteers sorting items into more than 150 bags of food for delivery to the community.

“How I got involved is I’m a local Realtor and wanted to do something nice,” said Loraine, who lives in Lakewood. “I started a food drive four years ago. Every year, I would show up with two truckloads of goods that they needed.

“They asked me if I wanted to be more involved. I said, ‘Absolutely, it’s a very cool organization.’ Knowing that one of my neighbors could go without Thanksgiving dinner is heartbreaking to me.”

Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corp. is currently in need of specific (non-glass) items: canned fruit, peanut butter, chili, tuna, applesauce, ravioli, Chef Boyardee products and canned proteins.
