CULT Food Science Corp (CSE:CULT, OTCQB:CULTF) said its Singapore-based portfolio company, Umami Meats, has unveiled the world’s first cultivated fish balls, which it presented in a spicy noodle dish known locally as 'laksa', on August 30, 2022.
Umami, a cellular agriculture start-up company developing sustainable alternatives for endangered fish species, created the fish balls by combining cultivated fish with plant proteins to give them a similar taste and texture to that of traditional fish balls.
“Creating a cell-based fish ball laksa prototype is quite an achievement in the cellular agriculture field. Nothing has been developed like it so far, and CULT is keen to support Umami in this initiative,” CULT CEO Lejjy Gafour said in a statement.

“Umami is on a great path and, at this rate, its innovations may very well lead us to a better and more sustainable future,” he added.
Being Singapore-based, the idea of using the laksa dish to present Umami’s first product prototype was conceived to reflect the country’s rich culture and love for delicious food, CULT said.
“Heavy industrial fishing, a rapidly growing population, and climate change have resulted in the overuse and depletion of fish availability as well as global food insecurity. On that basis, Umami is forging ahead to make cell-based fish a high-priority solution,” the Vancouver-based company noted.
Umami has developed a proprietary, non-GMO process for producing fish muscle, fat, and connective tissue from a single stem cell, and is actively developing the technology that will enable the production of cultivated seafood products for a range of the world’s most vulnerable fish species, it added.

Corporate continuance
CULT also announced that it has completed its continuation out of the Province of British Columbia into the Province of Ontario, which was approved by the company’s shareholders at a special general meeting held on August 24, 2022.
The company said there will be no change in its day-to-day business as a result of the change in jurisdictions.
The first-of-its-kind in North America, CULT is an innovative investment platform with an exclusive focus on cellular agriculture. It aims to provide individual investors with unprecedented exposure to the most innovative start-up, private or early-stage companies championing novel technologies to provide a sustainable, environmental, and ethical solution to the global factory farming crisis.
