Joseph Duffy to lead St. Clair Superior Development Corp. - Crain's Cleveland Business

Joseph Duffy has been named the new executive director of the St. Clair Superior Development Corp. (SCSDC), according to a news release.

Bringing 10 years of experience in the public and private sectors, Duffy joins SCSDC from the Union Miles Development Corp., where he served as real estate development director. In addition to his work in Union-Miles, he has worked with community development groups in the Gateway and Warehouse districts and Slavic Village.

Anne Goodman, former president of the St. Luke's Foundation who has been interim director of SCSDC since May, will depart at the end of October, according to the release. She led the organization through the summer and throughout the executive search process, which was led by Strategy Design Partners.

"The SCSDC board and Search Committee put a lot of time and effort into finding our next leader, and we are excited to welcome Joe to our team," said Bryan Mauk, SCSDC's board president, in a provided statement. "We have a lot to look forward to as an organization and community. Joe will be a great asset as we embark on a strategic planning process that will prioritize community listening."

SCSDC this summer began a partnership with the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, which has designed a program to develop professional support and strategies to optimize the effectiveness of community development organizations.

The partnership with SCSDC is the first undertaking of this program, which is called the Community Development Corporation Learning Lab (CDCLL) and is part of the foundation's Community Development Corporation Leadership Program scheduled to begin in 2021. It's designed to increase the operational capacity of underperforming CDC's in the neighborhoods of Cleveland, according to the release.

Duffy has an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, a bachelor's degree focused on psychology and fine arts from Ohio Wesleyan University, and a certificate in urban planning from the University of California, Berkeley, according to the release. He also is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

"I view community development work as a necessary means to heal longstanding inequities — bridging the gap — so that we may yield stronger communities for all individuals within," Duffy said in a provided statement. "And I am very excited to work with the residents and stakeholders of St. Clair Superior to continue to build a strong, welcoming community."

Early next year, SCSDC will begin a strategic planning process that will engage the community and provide the organization with strategic goals and priorities for the future, according to the release.
