SAN ANGELO — In a move which signals the revival of the lamb processing industry in Tom Green County, a Colorado company has leased a former meatpacking plant outside of San Angelo and will soon process up to 200,000 head of lamb per year.
After the city council of San Angelo authorized the lease of the land, the Double J Meat Packing company has set up operations at the former Ranchers Lamb of Texas plant and will process lamb from Texas and Colorado.
The plant will be renamed “Double J Lamb, Inc. – Texas".
The move will revive a facility that had been closed down since 2005, and it is projected to bring 80-100 jobs to the area. Owner Jay Hasbrouck said he expects the facility to be up and running in a few months.

"We came here with an idea and a passion for the lamb industry," Hasbrouck said. "We brought it from Colorado. I always knew this opportunity was here, and we saw an opportunity to bring the lamb business back to Texas. We are looking forward to working with the sheep producers in Texas and supplying the great state of Texas with lamb out of this plant. We've been in this business a long time, and I've never had the welcoming and support like we have had from the city of San Angelo."
San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter said the new business could bring the area back to a status it once held as a leader in the industry.

"San Angelo has always had a strong, solid economy based on agriculture," Gunter said. "We believe this lease will support the city's long history of having a sheep and mohair business. At one time, San Angelo was the inland sheep and mohair capital. We believe this is an important step in continuing to support the industry."
