STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) announced its plans to launch a community development initiative to assist communities underserved during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The program will be separated into two primary sections: Direct services and neighborhood planning and policy, with a focus on low-income communities and specifically women-, immigrant- and minority-owned businesses.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re expanding our efforts to create an environment that promotes more business, education, and employment opportunities for those who have been overlooked in the past,” stated SIEDC President and CEO Cesar J. Claro. “We intend to use our expertise to act as a bridge between underserved populations and the business community to expand the health, wealth, and education opportunities for those communities.”
Direct services will include a weekly, free educational webinar for minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBE) and regulatory navigation services; MWBE procurement assistance; the “SI Works” employment program; an underserved youth employment service focused on youth internships and full-time youth employment; and the Staten Island Local Resident College Scholarship Fund.
Simultaneously, local firms will be asked to participate in the SIEDC Community Development Business Give Back Program through which they can support the direct services for underserved communities by presenting at one of weekly MWBE webinars, donating to a Staten Island Local Resident Scholarship Program, hiring a young person for an internship or long-term employment opportunity, or donating to the SIEDC Community Development Program in some other way.
Neighborhood planning and policy will be categorized into several different sections. There will be healthy housing, transportation, resilience and sustainability, open space and waterfront planning, and economic mobility.
In addition, businesses will receive help in shifting business practices into public space for immediate concerns faced by current COVID-19 regulations.
Claro added that the SIEDC plans to connect out-of-work youth with hiring agents at local businesses, as well as connect experts on various elements of business development to offer targeted sessions that will help grow immigrant- and women-owned firms.
“We’re in the process now of developing partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations whose clientele are living and working in underserved communities,” Claro added. " We’ll establish what the needs are together, and then begin to make the connections.”
