  • The social connections help them keep going during pandemic

The Comedor Run Club aims to bring servers together during a time when their industry is facing distance and uncertainty.

“We connect and discuss our relationship with drugs and alcohol in the workplace, " said Philip Speer, owner of the Comedor.

The group meets to discuss the industry and recovery maintenance during their 3.2 mile run.

For Annie Duke, the pandemic has meant unemployment, depression, and the challenge of continued sobriety. Like the others in this group, she says running helps.

“I actually have 11.5 years sober, so I’m one of those people in the food and beverage industry that’s sober. And this is a huge part of my recovery, is running," said Duke.

Duke says the restaurant industry is tight-knit. And many are recovering addicts who need connection to stay healthy.

“It’s like to find like-minded people, you’re still running solo, but to have your friends ahead of you and behind you and like, there’s no greater feeling than that," said Duke.

That feeling rivaled only by crossing the finish line on one of her weekly runs.

The run club meets outside the Comedor in downtown Austin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m.
