WASHINGTON — President Trump on Friday declared News Corp CEO Robert Thomson “the most powerful man in all of media.”
The president pointed out Thomson to fellow journalists in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room after he signed a $8.3 billion coronavirus bill.
“The most powerful man in all of media!” Trump declared, taking a break from questions on the COVID-19 virus.
Thomson, a former Wall Street Journal managing editor, started his career as a journalist in Australia. He now leads the parent company of the New York Post and the Journal.
“He has a little something to do with the Wall Street Journal,” Trump told White House reporters. “I don’t know if you know. It’s his real power, right?”
Trump added, pointing to the White House press pool: “You used to do what they did, right? And he did it so well that he’s the boss at News Corp.”
Trump also gave a shout-out to News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch, the company’s co-chairman and CEO of Fox Corporation, which owns Fox News.
“Of course, Rupert has something to say with that I guess, right? And Lachlan,” Trump continued. “It’s good to have you. It’s good to have you,” he said to Thomson.
“They treat me very nicely, the media, right? Except the Wall Street Journal, but that’s OK,” the president joked.
Shortly after, he boarded Marine One to head out on a tour of Tennessee tornado damage.
