CINCINNATI, Ohio — On Sept. 1, iconic buildings were lit red in hopes to spark congressional support for the RESTART Act as part of a national campaign to save the live events industry.

What You Need To Know

  • Buildings all across the country were lit up red as part of the Red Alert Campaign on Sept. 1

  • The campaign is advocating for the arts and entertainment industry, which has been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic

  • Organizers hope nationwide event will be a call to action for legislators to include the Live Events industry in the next relief bill

Todd Duesing, Cincinnati Arts Association vice president and chief operating officer, said the time to act is now because the industry is on ed alert.

“The unexpected loss of event dependent revenue and declining charitable contributions from businesses and our donor partners so sudden has been a huge impact on us,” Duesing said.

He said the live events and performing arts industry was one of the first industries impacted and will likely be the last to return due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s very challenging for us right now as a whole; the entire industry and people are nervous about what’s next,” Duesing said.

The city of Cincinnati illuminated more than 20 buildings and Dayton 16 venues to sound the alarm.

Lori Salzarulo, the senior events manager from the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, said the event was also geared toward motivating support for the RESTART Act.

“When people see things lit up in red, it’s really a reminder that, you know, most of these are venues you can’t go to right now and they are all really struggling,” she said. “To get back on our feet, we need these folks to come back when things are open again. To help them financially is really what this is about. And then reaching out to your congress people to help push this package through."

According to data from Americans for the Arts, 62 percent of arts workers report they are fully unemployed and 94 percent of arts workers report income loss.

Salzarulo said the time to act is now before it’s too late.

“Without them getting back to work soon or having some sort of stimulus to help them get through this, they’re not going to be around for 2021 if we even are able to start to do them again by then,” she said.
